Hooligans, Will They Ever Learn?

It’s happened again. Derby in Stockholm and as usual there’s trouble on the stands.
This time it was Hammarbys turn to behave like asses, so much for their reputation of being the least troublesome fans in Stockholm.

It was this Monday, when the ref blew the whistle and pointed at the penalty spot. In favor for AIK. That’s when it went out of hand. After 82 minutes of football. Fireworks were fired from Hammarbys stand, right behind AIKs keeper, and landed right beside him. From what I understand it was pure luck that he didn’t got hit by it and that he noticed it so he could avoid it when it exploded. In all the commotion the no-gooders were attacked by other supporters that disapproved of their conduct.

You can read about this in pretty much any Swedish magazine covering football, and probably some foreign ones too so enough about that. Whats more interesting is the interview I read today with Hammarbys team manager (what ever he does) Peter Thunell.

First of all he says that the game should be aborted as soon as something like this happens. I couldn’t agree more. Time and time again we see this happen and we often see that the team who’s fans caused the interruption benefits from it. The signal it sends to restart a game after these events is that crime pays and it shouldn’t.
Secondly he has realized something more of us must realize: it’s come to a point where the police, clubs, supporter clubs, security companies etc are powerless. There’s nothing that can be done other than playing with empty stands. What needs to happen is that the low lives need to understand that they are not welcome, that their actions will only hurt themselves and others.

I said that the police can’t do anything. You can always argue that increased penalties to both the criminals and the clubs might make people think twice before doing something stupid and I think that’s one step in the right direction but it’s not a solution. It won’t be enough, if it was we wouldn’t have much crime at all.
Instead we have to react and by we I mean other supporters. Peter Thunell claims that if the game is aborted and the team who’s fans that cause it automatically loose the game (which is the effect of an aborted game) the fans will self-sanitize this problem by simply beating the person/persons that misbehave up, thus making sure that they’ll learn their lesson and not do it again. He doesn’t say it’s a necessarily good way to solve the problem but it seems to be the only one that has even a remote chance of working. I actually tend to agree even though I consider people beating up idiots are idiots themselves.

The reality is that there’s a problem without a solution so why not try the law of the jungle on this one?

we have the same problem (obviously) in germany, mostly in the lower leagues though for some reason.

And they feel just as helpless as you describe, police and security firms just being at their limit of what they can do. so the german league has resorted to the following when something like this happens:
a) abort game
b) the team who’s ’supporters’ started it loses
c) the team who’s ’supporters’ started it has to pay a high fine
d) possibly the team has to play before empty stands for a while.

So this goes basically the same way you (or Thunell) described. Hurt the club badly so that the clubs (i.e. their supporters) solve the problem themselves. Its not a pretty solution but it seems that that’s the only one that helps a little at this point.

I don’t really understand fan hooliganism really because it mixes up two completely different things: the love for a game and/or a club with the love for senseless violence.

if you look at this video, you will see a prime example of where this separation has worked: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bGq33WUJQQ
Two hooligan groups from two German teams (frankfurt and cologne – frankfurt wins of course ;-) ) meet in the forrest to beat each other up. There are rules (don’t hit anyone who is on the ground, no weapons), there are dress codes and they even stretch! I think this is great. They share the love for pointless violence and full contact martial combat and they love it out where nobody gets in the way. i think public fight grounds should be government sponsored so that those guys can let off steam somewhere far away from a sports event.

Obviously, it is more fun to fight over some “issue” or for some common “goal”. Look at braveheart, thats the same thing. But since territorial borders are somewhat concrete in Europe nowadays you need to find something else to fight over. Sports is emotional. Gets you blood pumping. I guess …

in conclusion. i agree. no idea how to end it. hurting the teams can help short term, but surely not in the long run … right ?

What’s interesting is that they have come to terms with this issue in England. they don’t even have fences surrounding the field there. This has come at cost though. High ticket prices, no standing stance etc but it works. The big difference there is that the clubs are allowed, and have the means, to react when someone fucks up. In England you go to jail no questions asked. In Sweden you’ll be released within hours, worst case you’ll be fined.

I definitely think this England’s example is the way to go but until then the only thing that can be done is the abcd-list you presented. We have that action list here as well but I don’t think we use it enough.

About the publicly sponsored fighting grounds, well, I’m not sure I agree. Either way that issue isn’t a football issue but one for our society to handle in my opinion and maybe your idea is the way to go, I don’t know.

at some point i guess every society has to come up with a way to deal with the violence loving low-lifes s you called them. the US has grat success using the marine corps in combination with places like iraq and Afghanistan. china has tai-chi. the muslim world has Al-Qaeda. Britain used to have Australia, but that kinda got out of hand. finland has extreme-sauna-marathons. new zealand has sheep. lots of sheep.
but us central europeans? we just have beer and soccer. and in your case, the beer is really expensive.
