Australia Day 11 – Brisbane

We woke up late today, around 11 am. It’s just 10 pm now and we are headed for bed shortly. Yesterdays night out in combination with too little sleep for too long proved to be too much for us :)

We found a “beach” in Brissie today. It’s an artifical sand beach with a sea-like pool just beside the river. We are probably going to spend new years eve there. They’ll do two rounds of fireworks, play live music and show outdoor movies. There’s a non-alcohol policy there though so I guess we’ll wander off to a nearby bar when we get thirsty :)

We had dinner at a chinese restaurant in china town which is only one block from our hostel (yes really, they have chinese restaurants in china town here, it’s amazing). Great food and really cheap. We had three main courses and drinks for just $45 (250 SEK). Food in general is cheap here in Australia but this was almost free :)

I hope you guys will have a great new years eve. We’ll celebrate a couple of hours before you guys and I promise that I won’t think of you when your clock hits midnight, it’ll be 9 am here by then so I will hopefully be asleep with a steady hangover :)

That’s it for now, next time you hear from me it will be a new year with new opportunities and, hopefully, better wheather :)

Australia Day 10 – Brisbane

Change of plans. The trip to Fraser over new years has been postponed. They’ve closed down the island and won’t let anyone cross to water to get there at the moment so we have rescheduled our trip to January 2nd.  This means that we’ll spend two more days in Brisbane including new years eve. We haven’t really figured out how to spend the time here yet but we have a few ideas :)

We went out last night to Birdie Nam Nam, the hostels own night club (which also allows non backpackers to come in and it seems that quite a few Brissies acctually go there). With cheap beer and a lot of people it turned out to be a great night.  Helena had her purse stolen though which somewhat spoiled the evening :(

Australia Day 9 – Surfers Paradise

Did I say the waves at Byron Bay was big and impressing? I was wrong! Yesterday I was knocked off my feat by a wave that was roughly 3 meter high. Seriously. I’m not exaggerating, the waves were huge!

We finally got a sunny day in Surfers yesterday and it was a great day.
We started off at the beach messing about in the waves having a great time. Once we got tired of the sand we went back to the hostels and sat down by the pool for a couple of hours.

We had our second home cooked meal for the trip, lamb and pasta. It was really good but we could’ve used some more seasoning :)
After dinner we went out and had a cuple of beers thinking that we would have a slow night since we had to get up early today to get on the bus to Brissie. We left downtime at around 9 and went back to as planned.
Once there we met up with two swedish girls we met the day before and they were getting ready to go out with a large pack from the hostel. They were also going to take the same bus as us the next morning. It took them about 2 minutes to persuade us to oin them so we sank two more beers and headed back out to town.

We came back around 2-ish (we think, we didn’t have a watch) after being out dancing which was real fun, great DJ :)
We managed to get up today and caught the bus to Brissie. The bus was about one hour late so we have enjoyed a nice one hour stay at Surfers bus stop. We haven’t done much today, just walking around Brissie, sightseeing as we are supposed to be. We are going out tonight but we don’t know where yet.

The hostel seems really good so far. Nice staff, clean quarters etc.
The only thing that worries us at the moment is the cyclone warnings issued at Fraser island where we are headed in just 2 days. Let’s hope it blows over, literally :)

Australia Day 7 & 8 – Surfers Paradise

Sorry I didn’t write yesterday but it seemed like my web host was having some troubles with the database servers :)

We’ve been here in Surfers for 2 days now and we are yet to see the sun. The clouds refuse to break up and it’s raining on and off. It’s still warm though so we can’t complain too much. We heard on the TV that they shut down 7 beaches south of us due to cyclone warnings and it’s supposed to be windy in the north as well.

They show movies on the beach at night here in Surfers. We went down there last night for a while. The movie wasn’t that good (Superman Returns) so we left early but it was very nice sitting there on the beach watching a film on a big screen.

We’ve made plans for new years! We are going to be out on Fraser Island! If the weather is good it’ll probably be the best new years ever :)

Australia Day 6 – Byron Bay

The train ride from Sydney was alright. Swedish train are more comfortable but the leg space was good.

We came to Byron Bay on the 25th without a hostel reservation. Bad idea it turned out. Almost everything in the town was closed or full. We found a motel that had one room left and took it even though it was a bit expensive.

We spent almost tghe entire day on the beach. The weather was great and the view was fantastic. There was a lookout point at the end of Byron Beach where we went . From there we could see more beaches streching for miles on both sides and the waves breaking as they came to shore. I have a couple of nice pics to show for it :)

As I said almost the entire city was closed so there wasn’t much to do. I think going here on any other day than christmas day would be more fun. I liked the town though. Very small and cozy and it had a nice atmosphere to it.

When we woke up to day it was raining heavy (glad we spenmt the money on the room after all). We jumped on the first bus to Surfers Paradise and here we are. The weather is still bad wioth grey skies and showers coming on and off. Hopefully it will clear up tomorrow.

That’s all for now I think. I’ve probably forgot to mention a bunch of things as usual but that just gives me more tell when I get back.

Australia Day 5 – Sydney Tower

Our last day in Sydney. We’ll take the train to Byron Bay at 4:20 pm. Once we get there we really need to find a place to stay over night :)

Anyway, considering we only had a few hours to spen in Sydney today we decided to go up the Sydney Tower to have a look at the view and get some photos.

I’m trying to upload pics to my server right now but it’s not fast enough so I don’t think I can present them to you yet. I’ll give it a new try later.

Merry christmas everyone!

Australia Day 4 – Sydney, Taronga Zoo

We took the ferry to Taronga Zoo today.
The ferry ride was nice. We had a geat view of the city from the water and caught a few pictures of the Opera House and the city skyline from there.

The zoo was kind of cool with all the exotic animals. A couple of new ones even though I’ve seen most of them before. It was a good day in all with sunny weather and a lot of walking.

We met up with Ryan for a beer after the zoo before we went back to Newtown for dinner and sleep.

Australia Day 3 – Sydney Harbor Bridge

After a long night we woke up late today. We finally made it to the subway around 3 pm. We took the train to the harbor where we started off by viewing the opera house. After that we went to Sydney Bridge Climb.

Bridge Climb is a company that takes you on a guided tour up on the arch of the Harbor Bridge about 100 meters above sea level. It was a great experience and the view was fantastic. We saw pretty much all of Sydney from up there. Unfortunatly we couldn’t bring our cameras for safety reasons so there are no photos :(

If you ever come to Sydney I really recommend that you climb the bridge. The only thing that didn’t was as I had expected was how easy it was. I’d hope it to be more of a thrill but it wasn’t scary at all.

On the way down the wind got stronger and at times it almost felt as if you fly away. Fantastic!

It’s bed time now, atleast for us, we’re exausted. The nightlife here in Newtown seems to have just woken up but we’ll take a break from that tonight. We’re going to the zoo tomorrow and perhaps ip the Sydney Tower to get some photos from above. I like Sydney more and more but it feels good to know that we are leaving in two days.
I’l try to upload some photos tomorrow if I can find the time.

Australia Day 2 – Bondi Beach

A perfect world… there was only one thing missing today; a fruit drink. We just got back from a day in the sun at Bondi Beach. The weather was perfect with the sun high in the sky and not a cloud in site. A calm cool wind made the temperature perfect. (hrm… I hear Christmas music from around the corner just now. I can’t describe how strange it is to have people saying merry Christmas and see all the ordnanents etc when it’s 25 degrees outside) The water was cold at first but I think it was probably being hot and not the water that was cold. Huge waves, one of them literally knocked me off my feat, strong currents, a bit scary a few times and a nifty ball (wazuba ball, google it) made the water a fun place to be.We’re back at the hostel now having a couple of beer before going out to meet a friend of Helenas. Talk to you later :) Ps. I blog from my iTouch so it’s hard to get an overview of the text and since I don’t proof read anything before posting there might be some typos, strange word flow and repeating on my behalf so please keep that in mind when reading :)
