Apple is great but do they break the law?

I stumbled across something intresting just a couple of minutes ago.

I wanted to “Get album artwork” from iTunes to my music library when iTunes said that I needed an iTunes Store account. Fair enough I thought and started the registration process.

It started out just as any registration does; they wanted my name, my email and so forth. Then I came to step three (out of three so I can only assume that it was infact the last step) and this made me think.

In step three they asked me for credit card details. Since this was the last step, and since I was not asked to pay anything after i register these details I can only assume that they want it for future reference. This bothered me quite alot.

I work in a business where we handle sensitive information such as credit card details and we do all this by the book. This means that we do not keep such information in any kind of log, database or anywhere else. Yet, it seems like Apple want my information for one single purpose: to make it easier for me when I want to purchase music through the iTunes Store by simply clicking the song I want. They can’t charge me for the music without either a) have my credit card information stored somewhere or b) have me fill in my details every time I want to purchase a song.

Option b would be the correct way to do but I’m not 100% sure if option a is illeagal or not. Can someone please help me out here. I think that storing this kind of information is illegal but I really don’t want to put in the effort to find if this is true or not right now. Am I yet to receive a good response with refrences posted due tomorrow night I’ll probably look it up my self. Btw, don’t forget where you read this first….

There are several sites where you can store your card-detail for future use, like malmo aviation, sas and some other.

The question is, what is a mahna mahna?
The question is, who cares?

i started out with apple just like you. “why do i need to enter my cc info for album covers?” i ended the issue just like erik: “who cares?”

i don’t *know* if this is legal but i have a feeling that apple wouldn’t do something this crucial to the success of itunes without haveing it thoroughly checked beforehand ?

after doing some searching it appears to be legal if you comply to a number of diffrent things. Although, i still so wonder why they need this info for a free service…

but you answered that yourself in the post, i think: they don’t need to. but this way they are lowering the barrier.
option a) just give free stuff without registration. when people want to buy stuff, they need to register. they have the impulse to buy something online, then they are forced to enter credit card details … that gets them thinking and interrupts the buying process
option b) make people register credit card details when they dont want to buy something. they won’t be repelled because they think “hey, i am not spending money”. then later on when they have the impulse to buy, they can just click and buy. no interruption of the buying process.

i would chose option b if i was apple …
