nordenfelt.2.0 discontinued

Last night I sat down intending to do some serious progress with nordenfelt.2.0. It all started out great and I was very satisfied with myself when everything started to go wrong. My mood went from top of the world to 6 feet deep within 30 minutes and after roughly two hours of cursing I finally gave up and turned the computer off.

There are multiple reasons to why it all went Pete Tong and I’ll spare you the details but in the end it turned out that web 2.0 simply isn’t advanced enough for me to realize all my ideas.

So where do I go from here? I still have a crappy, boring site with nothing but text. There is nothing on this site that makes me proud that I built it, it’s not even my back-end to begin with!

The way I see it I have two alternatives:

1: I just continue using this site as is but remodel it a bit by adding a few nice features and more functionality (not to mention securing it since it at the moment probably has a lot of security holes, damn those off-the-shelf applications).

2: I rethink my intial plan with nordenfelt.2.0 and reduce the amount of advanced features I put in to it. This might seem like a good idea but I must say that the thought of doing this hurts since the end result would only be a half baked implementation of what’s in my head. Still, it is much more appealing than #1.

As always the issue here is time. I have a little over month to finalizing everything and given that I can’t put in more than a few hours a week working on this I’m in trouble. I’m going to let my failure sink in before I make the descision so I don’t rush in to building something I won’t like in the end becuase in the end, that’s all that matters.

I had the same thing happening to me. Obviously, since i am about 10% of the programmer you are, my failure was a lot earlier. Nevertheless it was the same effect: Great ideas, no time and/or possibilities to realize them.
I then sat down and thought about what the website *is* for me. A hobby? A project? A playground for toying with new technology? In the end i found out that the sole objective of my website is to be an efficient way of keeping in touch with friends by posting news and/or pictures while investing the least amount of precious spare time. So I chose 1 without adding a whole lot. But I also decided that webdevelopment is not going to play a big role in my life at some point. That’s different for you, obviously.
My two cents. Maybe it helps.

With my new position at work being further away from actual coding and the fact that I really love coding tells me that, too me, this site is more than just a tool I can use to communicate with people. I appreciate your thoughts on the subject and see your point but as you say, this is diffrent for us. This is also the only real place where I can play around with web 2.0-ish stuff and acctually put it to use.
